The Centre’s aerodynamics work is focussed on improving aerodynamics without reducing vehicle capacity. This is carried out by using the following methods:
- Novel laboratory experimental methods with systematic investigation of vehicle features;
- Improved vehicles tested in-service in collaboration with Waitrose and Tesco, with extensive measurements.
The resulting soultion is a package of measures for improving the aerodynamics of tractor-semitrailer vehicles, including optimised rear end taper, underbodies, cab gaps and side skirts.
Results of the research showed a 14% reduction in aerodynamic drag coefficient in modified vehicles. Results have been adopted in member fleets.. see case study
