Project JOLT is an ambitious initiative focused specifically on delivering real-world trials of electric HGVs (eHGVs) to understand their financial, technical and operational implications. There are four main dimensions – logistics, energy supply, infrastructure and finance. Spearheaded by The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF), Project JOLT brings together a consortium of leading industry partners, including John Lewis Partnership. Volvo Trucks UK, and Flexible Power Systems

Following the launch in March 2025, considerable strides have been made. The project is now in the third round of the ‘round-robin’ exercise.  Click here for information about the DP World trial at Southampton Container port.   Fleet Operators tend to start with relatively simple shuttle operations, before feeling more confident to test their longer lanes.

We are using four, soon to be five, eHGVS  for the round robin from Mercedes, Scania, Volvo, MAN and DAF Dealer, the HTC Group. Charging facilities are provided by Evyve or in some cases by the hauliers themselves.

In addition, some hauliers are using their own eHGVs. This has resulted in 9 eHGVs and a number of diesel comparator vehicles having installed data loggers and generating high-resolution performance data.  Data is also being collected from the OEM telematics systems, from the Chargers and from Logistics systems. Initial haulier concerns remain capital cost, payload and range. Prof David Cebon and his team are analysing the wealth of data, reporting back to the project participants and bringing greater certainty to these issues.  They are also looking at other variables including logistics costs, TCO and battery performance.
