About Logistics UK
Logistics UK is one of the UK’s largest trade associations and represents the transport interests of companies moving goods by road, rail, sea and air. Boasting a rich heritage, Logistics UK can trace its origins back to 1889 and and during 2014 celebrated 125 years as the voice of the freight and logistics sector. The association has been supporting the interests of the transport industry since it was originated. Logistics UK members operate more than 200,000 goods vehicles – almost half the UK fleet. In addition, our members deliver over 90 per cent of freight moved by rail; and 70 per cent of UK visible exports by sea and air. Additionally, Logistics UK manages the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, a voluntary initiative to record, report and reduce carbon emissions from freight transport. The LCRS’s Annual Awards celebrate the individual efforts of members to reduce carbon emissions. 2014 winners’ included DHL Supply Chain, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Turners (Soham) Ltd.
Logistics UK and the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight
Building on a long standing relationship with Heriot-Watt University, Logistics UK was proud to become one of the first consortium members of the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight. Logistics UK welcomes a research centre that is dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of road freight transport and providing opportunities for decarbonising freight.
As both UK Government and the European Commission set ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets, freight transport is expected to play its part in reducing emissions. It is vital that industry can respond with leading edge research identifying how the freight sector can contribute to reducing emissions.
Benefits of membership
The main benefits to Logistics UK of participating in SRF are:
- Research is set by consortium members so asks the relevant questions that industry needs to know
- Research is provided by two leading universities of expertise, Heriot-Watt University and Cambridge University, who specialise in logistics and engineering respectively
- The Centre can help progress the development of Logistics UK’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme and our wider Carbon Policy.
- Working on developing better ways to measure carbon efficiency per load in the LCRS and involvement in an industry carbon reduction roadmap.
- As a consortium member, Logistics UK can represent the needs of its membership in tackling carbon reduction.
